FOR most people, living off $2 a day sounds impossible, but Caroline Galati, of Wellard, will do just that for an entire week.
Caroline will take part in the Live Below the Line campaign to help raise awareness of the |1.4 billion people worldwide who live off less than $1.25 (US) a day.
“It’s going to give me an authentic idea about what poverty is like,” she said. “For those 1.4 billion, that $2 (AUS) a day needs to cover everything from food to medicine.”
Caroline was recently involved in the Make Poverty History road trip to Canberra, which she said made her aware of the level of poverty many people suffered in the world today.
“It was a real eye-opener about poverty and how much work really needs to be done to change the state of global poverty,” she said. “I can’t just fly to Cambodia tomorrow, so it’s about raising awareness.”
Caroline said she would eat foods like rice, lentils, and some fruit and vegetables over the week but said she expected it to be a struggle.
Money raised from the campaign will go to schools in Papua New Guinea and Cambodia.
“The money will go to the schools, but not just to help set them up but hopefully help maintain them in the future,” she said.
