A GYM-based exercise program working to boost the vitality of cancer sufferers will kick off in Beechboro next month.

Exercise physiologist Kristy Maples said Life Now, run by the Cancer Council, was a 12-week program targeting cancer patients within two-years of diagnosis as well as their carers.

“We aim to improve their quality of life, rehabilitate them and build their motivation and confidence so that they not only exercise now, but stay physically active into the future,” Mrs Maples said.

She said they had helped one participant build up enough strength to go back to riding motocross, and another who was fighting their third bout of cancer to start walking unassisted by a frame.

She said that while the program improved function, reduced fatigue and muscle and bone loss, it also provided a positive social outlet.

Participant Gaye Quinlivan - who battled breast cancer in 2005 and uterine cancer last year - said the classes had given her more energy and helped her to feel better.

“I had never been to a gym before and had always been involved in team sports, but it was very comfortable and the girls are really friendly and get to know you,” she said.

Classes will be held at Altone Park Leisure Centre on Mondays and Thursdays from 1pm to 2pm, starting Monday, September 6.

To register, call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.
